AI search visibility is the chance that a company or its content is found, understood and cited in an AI-generated answer. For a B2B service company, the valuable outcome is not a mention for a broad industry term. It is being a credible source when a buyer asks a specific question connected to a service, problem, location or decision.
The practical work is less mysterious than the language around it. Google says the same SEO foundations apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode, with no additional technical requirement or special schema. OpenAI says public sites can appear in ChatGPT search and that publishers should allow OAI-SearchBot if they want content included in summaries and snippets. Microsoft recommends conventional crawlability, sitemaps and IndexNow, and now reports AI citations in Bing Webmaster Tools.
What AI search systems need from a B2B website
An answer engine has to discover a page, retrieve the relevant passage and judge whether it supports the question. The source also needs to be clear enough to cite. That creates four working requirements:
- Access: the relevant crawler can fetch the page and important text is present in the HTML.
- Relevance: the page answers a defined buyer question directly and completely.
- Identity: the service, company, market and author are not ambiguous.
- Evidence: important claims are supported by methods, examples or attributable sources.
This does not create a reliable “AI ranking formula.” Systems, queries and cited sources vary. It does provide a defensible checklist for removing obstacles and improving the usefulness of the site.
1. Check crawl access before changing content
Review robots.txt, page-level robots directives, canonical URLs, HTTP status codes and any CDN or firewall rules. Test the rendered page without relying only on what a browser displays. Important service details, definitions and proof should exist as selectable text rather than only inside an image, video or script-dependent widget.
For Google’s AI search features, a page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in Google Search. Googlebot controls Search access; Google-Extended is a separate control for some other generative AI uses and does not determine inclusion in Google Search. Google also says no special AI file or markup is needed.
For ChatGPT search, review access for OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI documents GPTBot separately for possible model training, so a publisher can make distinct decisions about search discovery and training. ChatGPT-User may visit a page in response to a user request and is not used to decide whether content appears in search.
Do not copy a generic robots template without discussing the policy internally. Record which agents are allowed, what the decision covers and who owns future changes.
2. Make discovery routes complete
Every commercially important page should be linked from a relevant hub such as Services, Insights or an industry page. Use descriptive anchor text that states the relationship. An orphaned article may exist in a sitemap, but it is harder for crawlers and people to understand its place in the site.
Maintain an XML sitemap with only canonical, indexable URLs. Give lastmod the date of a substantive page change, not the date the sitemap generator ran. Microsoft’s current guidance pairs sitemaps for complete URL coverage with IndexNow for faster notification when URLs are added, materially updated or removed.
Small service websites do not need an elaborate indexing stack. Verify the site in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, submit the sitemap, inspect a sample of important URLs and resolve inconsistent canonical or blocked-resource signals.
3. Build one page around one useful buyer intent
Broad thought leadership is difficult to retrieve for a precise question. Start with real decisions:
- How should a UK consultancy track qualified leads from Google Ads?
- What should a B2B landing page include for a high-consideration service?
- How should first-touch source survive a form-to-CRM handoff?
- What should a £3,000 monthly lead-generation budget fund first?
Use the question or task in the title, opening paragraph and heading structure naturally. Lead with a concise answer, then give definitions, steps, trade-offs, failure modes and the conditions under which the advice changes. That structure helps a buyer scan the page and creates self-contained passages that can support a cited answer.
Avoid creating several near-identical pages for small keyword variations. Consolidate overlap into a strong canonical resource. Google warns that scaled pages without added value can violate its spam policy, including when generative AI is used to produce them.
4. Remove ambiguity about the company and its expertise
State plainly who the company serves, where it operates, what it does and what it does not promise. Keep the company name, service descriptions and contact details consistent across Home, About, Services and relevant third-party profiles.
Give articles a visible byline and publication date. Link the byline to a genuine author or editorial page. If the author is an organisation, say so rather than inventing a person. Add appropriate Organization, Service, Article or BlogPosting structured data where it describes visible content accurately.
Structured data is a clarification layer, not an AI visibility switch. Google explicitly says there is no special schema for AI Overviews or AI Mode and requires structured data to match the page. Validate JSON-LD and fix contradictions between markup and visible copy.
5. Publish evidence that can survive scrutiny
Service-company content becomes more useful when it contains something verifiable: a calculation method, a decision table, an implementation sequence, a clearly labelled example or a primary source. Cite the regulator, platform documentation or original dataset for claims that can change.
Separate three types of statement:
- Fact: attributable to a named source and checked recently.
- Recommendation: the company’s professional judgement, with its assumptions stated.
- Result: supported by a real case, timeframe, baseline and measurement method.
Do not manufacture client results or present an illustrative number as a benchmark. If confidentiality prevents a useful case study, publish the method and explain what evidence a buyer should request from any provider.
6. Measure visibility without inventing precision
Track what the platforms expose and connect it to commercial outcomes. OpenAI says referral URLs from ChatGPT search include utm_source=chatgpt.com, so preserve that source through the form and into the CRM. Bing Webmaster Tools introduced AI Performance in public preview in February 2026, reporting total citations and cited pages across supported Microsoft AI experiences.
Use a small monthly scorecard:
- index status of priority pages in Google and Bing;
- AI citations and cited URLs where a platform reports them;
- referral sessions from identifiable AI sources;
- enquiries and qualified leads carrying those sources;
- coverage of the priority buyer questions the site is meant to answer.
Treat manual prompt checking as qualitative research, not a rank tracker. Answers can vary by wording, location, time, account context and model. Record the prompt and date if a check informs a decision, but do not turn a small prompt set into a share-of-voice claim.
A 30-day implementation sequence
- Week 1: audit robots controls, HTTP responses, canonicals, rendering, sitemap coverage and priority-page index status.
- Week 2: define ten high-value buyer questions and map each to an existing page, a planned page or a deliberate “not relevant” decision.
- Week 3: improve the three strongest commercial pages with direct answers, visible ownership, evidence, internal links and matching structured data.
- Week 4: configure referral-source capture, review Bing’s AI reporting if available, and establish a monthly evidence log.
Start with pages already close to revenue: core services, use cases, comparisons, implementation guides and problem-specific articles. Connect this work to the site’s wider AI search visibility approach, preserve campaign and referral source with a reliable B2B UTM and CRM tracking system, and use the lead-generation handoff to judge whether visibility becomes a qualified conversation.
